Biography

Dr Fabienne FORTON

Specialised in dermatology at the Free University of Brussels (ULB) in 1989, Dr Fabienne FORTON has been practising dermatology in Brussels, initially in various hospitals, then in private practice. She began to be interested by Demodex mites since 1983, when almost no one was interested in it, since it was considered as a non-pathogenic mite, when most doctors did even not know that the human skin harboured a mite. This was this very fact that piqued her curiosity. So, at first she was interested in an "academic curiosity", in a parasite that was supposed to cause problems only exceptionally. But, during her first years of dermatological practice, she gradually realized that in fact, the importance of the mite was clearly underestimated, because it actually concerned everyday dermatology and that an irrational/passionate climate reigned around its role in rosacea.  She therefore set out to provide scientific evidence in this passionate climate: to dare to question the prevailing opinion, apparently unchanged since 1933 (when its role in rosacea had already been mentioned), to focus solely on observation, objective analysis and logical reflection, in short, on scientific reasoning, and to provide, by all possible means at her disposal, new information allowing a better understanding of the pathogenic role of the parasite in human medicine and in rosacea in particular.

Although working exclusively in private practice, she published 19 international peer-reviewed articles, assembling them finally in a PhD thesis on the role of Demodex in rosacea, presented in June 2021 at the ULB.
